Five Places for Pittsburgh College Students to go This Summer

This blog is written by guest blogger Brian Torles.

Calling all Pitt, CMU, Point Park, Duquesne, and Chatham students! Take a break from your internship or job this summer and check out these fun activities to do in the Golden Triangle and beyond:

Pins Mechanical

This place is one of the hottest, new businesses in the Southside. With it being located in the middle of the Southside Works, next to many shops and local businesses, it’s no wonder that everyone is coming here! At Pins, there are many activities including Duckpin Bowling, Pinball, Foosball, and free “old school” arcade games, Patio Pong, Ping Pong, and Giant Jenga. This is technically a bar and they do serve alcoholic beverages; however, there is no kitchen so they let you bring in food or have it delivered from anywhere you would like! Not 21? No problem, folks under 21 are allowed in until 8 PM every day!

Mattress Factory

The Mattress Factory is an “art” museum, but not the way one would originally think. It is more of an immersive experience that truly lets the art become what the eye of the beholder wants it to be. With many rooms of art exhibits, some of which are the entire room itself, it is genuinely unlike any other art museum you have ever been to. Admission for students is $5 off, and on a rainy day (which in this city is expected almost every day) it could be a fun place to go with friends, family, or a significant other!

Color Park

Looking for your next photo op for your social media? Color Park is just the place to go! This park, located at the beginning of East Carson Street just next to Station Square, is free to go to and is full of (legal) graffiti. The colorful area and city view make for the perfect picture opportunity! The best part of this park? As long as you bring your own spray paint, you are free to paint whatever and wherever you want within the area of the park and within reason. Remember guys, please don’t go overboard!

PNC Park

Looking for a sporting event to go to, but don’t have much to spend on one? A Pirates Game this Summer might just be the answer for you! Recently, for the 2023 season’s home games, the Pittsburgh Pirates teamed up with a student discount website called “Student Beans” to give students up to 50% ticket prices. Remember, the games must be home games and the tickets can only be purchased online, not at the box office the days of the game.

Golden Triangle Bike Rentals

Want to get out and get active, but not sure where to start downtown? Golden Triangle Bike Rentals could be the place for you! They offer reservations ranging from $20 for 2 hours to $60 for an overnight rental (24 hours). You can ride these rental bikes through the city or on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail! The business also offers guided tours as well as a self-guided tour map if you’re interested.

Remember to always keep your eyes peeled for student discounts on tickets or admission. Be sure to follow us on our Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok (all @consumersense) for many more tips on how to make to most of your summer in the Burgh!
